Dall Sheep Hunting

Welcome to Redstone Trophy Hunts – We offer world class hunting for Dall Sheep, Mountain Caribou, and Alaska/Yukon Moose. Wolf and Wolverine are also taken as available.

Redstone Trophy Hunts is located in the heart of the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT, Canada. The hunting area (S/OT/O5) lies 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and consists of 6000 square miles of magnificent, untouched wilderness. Elevations vary from 3,800 ft. to 7,500 ft.

This area supports a large population of Dall Sheep and Caribou. Hunter success has averaged 95% on both species over the last 15 years. Rams taken have averaged 10.5 years of age. A number of Boone and Crocket Caribou have also been harvested in recent years, including a pending new world record (463 BC points) in 2003.

Destination point is Norman Wells, NWT. Upon your arrival in Norman Wells, you are flown to our base camps by float plane. Both base camps (Hay Hook Lake and Dal Lake) are equipped with modern cookhouses, propane heated guest houses, and hot showers. Both camps offer excellent fishing for Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling.

From the base camps, you will travel by saddle horse/pack horse, river boat, or helicopter to different ranges and drainages within the area. This enables hunters to access much of the area and harvest the best animals available. It also enables us to accommodate people of mixed ages and physical abilities.

Fly camps consist of a private tent for the clients, guide tent, and a canvas style cook tent with stove for meals and after dinner gatherings. For personalized service each client is assigned an experienced guide.

We provide all camps, equipment, food, guides, stock, tack, and accommodations while you are hunting. You will need to bring your personal effects, sleeping bag, binoculars, ammunition, boots, and clothing. You are also responsible for license fees, trophy fees, air charter to and from base camp, and Canadian GST.

Please call or write with any questions. We would be happy to forward an information packet for the upcoming season. Thank you for your time and consideration.

2005 Hunting Summary

Our first sheep hunt for the season was July 24 through August 3. We had a lot of rain at the beginning of the hunt causing extremely high water. The Dal Lake crew had to use the helicopter to return to base camp. Five rams were harvested between the Razor Ridge and Raven's Throat River.

August 3 through August 13 was the second sheep hunt for the season. Five rams and one caribou were harvested between Bailey Creek and the headwaters of the Louis Belle. Our weather had settled allowing us eight days of great hunting with the odd scattered shower.

Our third sheep hunt of the season ran from August 13 through August 27. With exception of two low fog days our weather enabled us to harvest four rams, three caribou, three wolves and a wolverine between the Endless Draw and the Black Cuts.

The fourth sheep hunt ran from August 27 through September 10. Slippery Creek, Boundary Creek and Canyon Creek were hunted. Seven rams were harvested early in the hunt allowing us to harvest four caribou and two moose later on. We were able to hunt all twelve days due to great weather.

The fifth and sixth hunts of the season were our caribou hunts. The fifth hunt ran from September 10 through September 15 and the sixth ran from September 15 through September 20. We had 100% on the two hunts – harvesting eleven caribou from our Hook Lake base camp. A lot of wolves were spotted, a few shot at but none taken. Our temperatures lowered and we ended up with some snow but this just made the caribou hunting that much better.

We offered a moose and caribou hunt at the end of our season. This hunt ran from September 20 through September 27. A helicopter was used to transport everyone to their camps. Two moose were harvested and three caribou along the Moose Horn and Raven's Throat river. Temperatures were cooler but the days were clear.

I would like to thank everyone who hunted with us this season; your business is much appreciated. Everyone contributed to another enjoyable season.

Also, a special thanks to Dallas, Arnold Payou, Steve Trelenurg, Dave Bueckert and Paul & Alexis Blueschke. Their experience, hard work and dedication made for another successful season for all.

Sincerely,

Dave Dutchik
