Dall Sheep Hunting

Welcome to Redstone Trophy Hunts – We offer world class hunting for Dall Sheep, Mountain Caribou, and Alaska/Yukon Moose. Wolf and Wolverine are also taken as available.

Redstone Trophy Hunts is located in the heart of the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT, Canada. The hunting area (S/OT/O5) lies 250 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and consists of 6000 square miles of magnificent, untouched wilderness. Elevations vary from 3,800 ft. to 7,500 ft.

This area supports a large population of Dall Sheep and Caribou. Hunter success has averaged 95% on both species over the last 15 years. Rams taken have averaged 10.5 years of age. A number of Boone and Crocket Caribou have also been harvested in recent years, including a pending new world record (463 BC points) in 2003.

Destination point is Norman Wells, NWT. Upon your arrival in Norman Wells, you are flown to our base camps by float plane. Both base camps (Hay Hook Lake and Dal Lake) are equipped with modern cookhouses, propane heated guest houses, and hot showers. Both camps offer excellent fishing for Lake Trout and Arctic Grayling.

From the base camps, you will travel by saddle horse/pack horse, river boat, or helicopter to different ranges and drainages within the area. This enables hunters to access much of the area and harvest the best animals available. It also enables us to accommodate people of mixed ages and physical abilities.

Fly camps consist of a private tent for the clients, guide tent, and a canvas style cook tent with stove for meals and after dinner gatherings. For personalized service each client is assigned an experienced guide.

We provide all camps, equipment, food, guides, stock, tack, and accommodations while you are hunting. You will need to bring your personal effects, sleeping bag, binoculars, ammunition, boots, and clothing. You are also responsible for license fees, trophy fees, air charter to and from base camp, and Canadian GST.

Please call or write with any questions. We would be happy to forward an information packet for the upcoming season. Thank you for your time and consideration.

August 3-13 was the 2nd hunt for this season. We had bluebird weather the entire week with highs in the 70’s, and lows in the 40’s.

John Guzman and Terry Cornell of MI flew into Hook Lake.

Jamie Escobar of TX, and Steve Ritchey & Mike Corrocci of OH landed at Dal Lake.

The Hook Lake group trailed to the Boundary Creek camp, and harvested one 10.5 year old ram and two nice caribou.

Terry had some hard luck on a large ram, but was able to extend his hunt into the next week. John made an excellent shot and took the only wolverine for the season.

The Dal Lake clients set up and hunted out of a new area called the Pinnacle camp.

They collected three rams including a 12.5, 10.5, and 8.5 year old. Jamie also filled his caribou tag with a beautiful caribou that green scored 418 BC points.

Both of these camps were very isolated and required a lot of saddle time to get there. The Dal Lake crew trailed into Hook Lake at the end of this trip.

On the third hunt of the season, August 13-27, guests were Bill Jean of MI, Mike Marta of WI, Jean Louis & Caroline Guirnette of TX, and Jim Shutiak & Terry Koski of Alberta. Caroline accompanied Jean Louis as an observer. Terry Cornell extended his hunt into this week.

We had beautiful weather the first 9 days of the hunt, with daytime temperatures in the 90’s and nighttime temperatures in the 50’s. We had colder weather and a foot of snow at higher elevations by the end of the hunt.

All of the hunters flew into Hook Lake base camp. Bill, Jim, and Terry K. hunted out of the Upper Tigonankweine camp, and harvested one 10.5 year old ram, two 9.5 year old rams, and three caribou. Bill connected on a large caribou with magnificent tops, scoring 396 BC points. Terry K. also collected a black wolf.

Terry C. hunted out of the Lower Tigonankweine camp, and filled his sheep tag with a nice 10.5 year old ram.

Mike and Jean Louis hunted out of the Sand Fly camp on the Redstone River. Mike collected a 10.5 year old ram and a gray wolf. Towards the end of the hunt, Jean Louis connected on a beautiful 11.5 year old broomed ram near Hook Lake.

We saw a large number of wolves and missed shots at several wolves on this hunt.

The fourth hunt for the season was August 27 through September 10. Hunters for the week were Keith Ainsley of OH, Eric Brown of AZ, and Dave McDonald & Bill Hirt of CO. We had some mixed weather throughout the week, with 4 days of snow and poor visibility.

All of the hunters flew into Hook Lake. Keith and Eric hunted out of the Delta Dawn camp, taking a 13.5 year old ram, a 10.5 year old ram, and 2  caribou. Eric’s caribou was the largest taken during this week, scoring 391 BC points.

Dave and Bill trailed out to the Canyon Creek camp. Bill harvested a 10.5 year old ram. Dave connected on an 11.5 year old ram in Slippery Creek. Two wolves were also shot at during this hunt.

The fifth hunt for the season (September 10-15) was a caribou hunt with a moose option. Guests for the week were Johnny Dilorenzo & Tony Carter of NY, Rick Young of OR, and Paul & Eugene Kamps, Jordan Engelsma, & Mike Andrews of MI. The Hook Lake Base Camp was used for this hunt.

We had cloudy weather for most of the week, with several days of fog and poor visibility. Daytime temperatures were in the 40’s, with nights dipping into the 20’s. Paul, Eugene & Jordan were archery hunting for most of the week.

Three caribou were taken during this hunt, all with the rifle. Several unsuccessful stalks were made, and one caribou was shot at and missed. One of the hunters also had a sheep tag and missed a ram.

Hunt # 5

We offered one week of moose hunting in 2004, September 18-23.

John Brekke of MT, Wynand & Harryet Pon and Francois & Lieneke Dekker of the Netherlands were clients for the week. Harryet and Lieneke accompanied as non-hunters.

A helicopter was used on this hunt to transport everyone to the hunting areas and camps to be used during the week. All actual hunting was done a foot from these camps.

All three hunters connected on their moose early in the hunt. All of the bulls were called in, and measured 65”, 63”, and 59” wide.  Two were collected on the Raven’s Throat River and one was harvested on the Moose Horn River. Francois also collected a nice caribou.

I would like to thank everyone who hunted with us this season, your business is much appreciated. The sheep hunting was excellent, with good weather for the most part. The caribou hunting was slower than normal. We did quite a bit of traveling during the early hunts, using some of the more remote camps. Everyone hunted hard and was a pleasure to be with.

Also, a special thanks to Dallas Gertner, Steve Trelenberg, Dave Bueckert, and Chris Anderson. Their experience, hard work and dedication made for another successful season for all.

Sincerely,

Dave Dutchik
